介词 in 和 with 都可以表示“用”,它们的区别是什么?
对于下面两句,有的书上是这样解释的:
用 in 表示材料(pen是材料),用 with 表示工具(a pen是工作)——这比较好理解:
Don’t write it in pen. 不要用钢笔写。
Don’t write it with a pen. 不要用钢笔写。
但是像下面这样的句子呢?该用什么介词?in 还是 with?
Could you say that again ______ words of one syllable?
▲在 Could you say that again ______ words of one syllable? 一句中应填介词 in。在表示语言、文字、句子、语调、口气、说话声等名词前,通常用介词 in。例如:
The definitions in this dictionary are written in simple language.(mwald)
In a few short sentences, Quinn explained what he had done.(ldoce)
I tried speaking to her in her native tongue.(oald)
He always talks in a whisper, so it's sometimes difficult to hear what he's saying.(cide)
The depth of my gratitude is not expressible in words.(wald)
How do you ask for directions in French? (ldoce)
▲另外还要注意,in words of one syllable 是固定短语,意为“简单地说”(in clear and simple terms)。朗文词典注释说,尤其因为对方理解力差的时候用这个短语(used especially because the person you are talking to is stupid)。所以要慎用。

介词 in 和 with 表示“用”的区别:
1. in 一般只用在说话、书写、绘画等特殊场合;with 则强调使用的工具和手段。例如:
Fill in the form in pen. 用钢笔填写表格。
The boy used to write his exercises with a pencil, but now he does them with a pen. 这个男孩过去常用铅笔做练习,现在他用钢笔做。
第一句中 in pen 强调纸上书写的结果,而第二句则强调工具。
2. in 强调“在......中”的概念;with 则仅表示“用”。例如:
We saw her holding a baby in her arm. 我们看见她把孩子抱在怀里。
We saw her holding a basket with her arm. 我们看见她用胳膊挎着篮子。
注:在下面一句中,in 不宜改成 with:
And there's some hot water on the stove to wash your face in. 火炉上有热水,你可以用它洗脸。

3. 在语言名词前面用 in ,例如:
in English 用英语
4. in words of one syllable (= using very simple language) 用简单的语言
