第一个问题： 

Scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. That's because they look black—although they give off light, the light can never reach us. They are the surprising dead stars called the balck holes. 

【翻译】科学家们认为，在天空中有些物体我们永远不会看到。这是因为他们看起来是黑色的，虽然它们也发光，但这些光永远不会照射到我们身边。它们就是那些被称为黑洞的意外的无生命星体。

▲ surprising 表示“意料之外的”。本身是有意义上的，怎么会是多余的呢？

第二个问题：

英语中，像hundred, thousand, million, billion 这些数词，可用来表示“具体”的数字，也可以用来表示“大概”（不确切）的数字。例如：

三百人：three hundred people；

数百人：hundreds of people。

表示具体数字时，之前加one (a), two, three, seven 等具体数字：one (two, three, seven) hundred people，之后不带of。

若表示“大概”（不确切）的数字，让数词本身用复数形式，后跟of，其前不能有具体的数字修饰，例如：

hundreds of workers

thousands of cows

tens of thousands of trees

▲ 理解这个数词短语的一个好办法是：

thousands of people 数千人（复数thousands本身就是“数千”，范围是2--9千人）

hundreds of thousands of people 数十万人（100 X 1000 = 100000，然后根据复数，就是“数十万”）

probably hundreds of thousands of  大概几十万——这个翻译还是比较准确的。几十万 = 数十万

英语类似这样的表达比较多，但缺乏比较准确的翻译。有些是用文学语言诠释的，翻译成：“千千万万，千百万”等。如果从准确的角度看待数字，可以根据上述办法来处理。

▲ 根据上述测算办法，hundreds of millions of 应该是“数亿”。例如：

1. We paid hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes.  我们交纳了数亿美元的税金。

2. Scientists say this could lead to design changes in airplanes that would save hundreds of millions of dollars in fuel costs.  科学家们说，这项成就将引起飞机设计上的变化,从而可以在飞机燃料费用方面节约数亿美元。
