按照语法规则，可数的普通名词，在单数状态下，在没有任何其他限定词修饰的情况下，需要加冠词（不定冠词或者定冠词）。但是，任何事物都有例外。在科技英语或新闻英语中，单数普通名词之前，省略冠词的用法是经常见到的，也是允许的。“零冠词+单数可数名词”的用法，可以理解为“表示类事物”。在这个特定情况下，加了冠词反而显得意思表达不准确：用单数加冠词不好，用复数也不好，干脆使用“零冠词+单数可数名词”。举例如下：

Now, you are able to use mobile phone to locate your own location, watch TV, play games and etc. 

现在，我们可以用移动电话定位，提供位置服务，收看电视和玩游戏。

Do not use mobile phone when driving. If it is necessary, please park your car first.

驾车时不要使用移动电话，如要使用，应首先停好车。

游戏是手机娱乐的重要应用之一，越来越多的人将手机作为游戏设备。

Similarly, if you use computer for long hours that also harm your eyes. 类似地，如果你使用电脑的时间长，也损害你的眼睛。

He intends to use computer in teaching. 

他企图把计算机用于教学。

Bicycle can’t be compared with other means of transportation like car and train for speed and comfort.在速度和舒适度方面，自行车是无法和汽车、火车这样的交通工具相比的。
