We all know fresh is best when it comes to food. However, most produce at the store went through weeks of travel and covered hundreds of miles before reaching the table. While farmer’s markets are a solid choice to reduce the journey, Babylon Micro-Farm (BMF) shortens it even more.

这是2024年新高考全国卷2阅读理解C的一句话。请问这里的 fresh 是形容词吧？它也可以作主语？

我是这样理解的：这是英语中的一种特殊用法，用于特殊语境。因为后面is best.形成了这种习惯说法，但一般仅限于描述性的形容词。这种用法不能套用普通的语法规则。请看几个外刊例句：

网友句子中提到的形容词作主语，在英语中并不少见，不仅在好题老师提到的外刊中有出现，而且在高考题中也时有出现。如下面一句摘自2011全国卷1阅读理解C：

While small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants. 身材矮小还可能算是美，但是个子高大似乎就就会不舒服了，尤其是在酒店住宿或在餐馆用餐的时候。

这类用法似乎有个特点，那就是，形容词作主语时，通常其表语也是形容词。
