关于than作比较代词时的疑问

看到一个句子Progerss has not been as fast as had been hoped.以及Progress with the building of the bridge is not so good as was expected.

请问这里than作为代替词代替了哪一个呢。我之前以为被比较项修饰的就是than所替代的。但这里看progress似乎才是。

或者可以说此时as/than此时充当了分句的主语？

因为之前看了曹老师那个回答than引导比较状语从句时，究竟是从属连词还是关系代词/关系副词

首先我们应该知道比较分句中的省略现象是一种常态。你的二个句子中比较分句都是省略了嵌入分句。

Progress has not been as fast as had been hoped.

= Progress has not been as fast as it had been hoped that it would be.

第一个it是形式主语，第二个it指代progress。would be的表语在that从句中缺失。如果我们把as分析为连词不做成分，那么that从句的表语就是比较对应项必须省略而留出的空位。如果我们把as分析为比较替代词，替代了表语形容词，则as就是would be的表语。这个that从句为比较分句中的嵌入分句。嵌入分句是可以省略的。that从句连同形式主语it一起省略，就得到了as had been hoped。

Progress with the building of the bridge is not so good as was expected.

=Progress with the building of the bridge is not so good as it was expected that it would be.

这个句子也是省略了形式主语it和嵌入分句that从句。不再重复解释。
