句中的 what they do 如何理解

原句来自一篇阅读理解。原文：

People should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do.

这句话我有两个疑问：

1 句中的that引导的是定语从句吗？

that they use (things)

2 为什么 use 后的 do 没有加 to?

我理解的是这样的 that they use （things）to do what they do.

希望老师们不吝解答!

1 that引导的是定语从句，修饰things。

2 你忽略了things是how引导的名词性从句的主语，do该从句的谓语动词，当然不是不定式了。how the things (that they use) do what they do.
