Andy Lee won't forget last April 17. The day got off to a bad start when he was late to work and had to drive fast.

请教专家老师：

1）如何理解这句The day got off to a bad start when he was late...：got off to a bad start是什么意思？主句和从句动作先后发生的顺序，关系？如何理解意思和翻译？

2）这句话 when he was late to work - 我感觉有误：应该改成： when he was going to be late to work，对吗？因为: when he was late - 说明他迟到了- 是事实。而and had to drive fast 说明还没有迟到，将要迟到。

不然原句的意思就是：上班迟到已经是事实了（例如8点上班，现在已经过了8点了），在这种情况下，为了不迟到更长时间，他had to drive fast。对吗？

3）这里的was late to work - 这个work是动词还是名词呢？为什么不是was late for work （类似be late for school）呢？

1. get off to a bad start 是习语，此句中的意思是“一开始就不顺利”。when 从句可以看作时间状语从句。请看韦氏词典的解释：

2. when he was late to work 这是说话人站在现在回忆过去发生的事时说的，所以不加be going to.因为这是已经发生的既定事实。你的理解错误在于站在了过去，按时间顺序去思考（过去的）未来。

3. 可以用late for work. 但late to work 也对，work是名词。请看外刊例句：
