3 know sb (to) do sth 与被动式 be known to do sth
前面有网友提问2022年高考英语全国甲卷（全国卷Ⅱ）阅读理解A中的问题。我在查阅相关原文时碰到了阅读理解B中的一个问题：
Though not known to use tools in the wild, the birds have proved skilful at tool use while kept in the cage.
这个句子中的 Though not known to use tools in the wild 应该是 Though they are not known to use tools in the wild 的省略形式吧。
我的问题是：
我在前面一个问题（https://www.cpsenglish.com/question/59841）了解到：
(1) know sb (to) do sth 中的动词 know 通常用完成式，但这里好像并不是完成式啊？
(2) 主动式 know sb (to) do sth 中的 to 可以省略，如果变成被动式，其中的 to 就一定不能省略了吧！

前面几位老师的解答都有道理。
但我想网友的问题也可以从另外一个角度来分析。
我相信网友一定熟悉下面的句子：
People say he is the richest man in the village.
It's said that he is the richest man in the village.
He's said to be the richest man in the village.
其实，动词 know 也具有与say相似的用法。比如可以说：
People know he is the richest man in the village.
It's known that he is the richest man in the village.
He's known to be the richest man in the village.
知道了以上用法，网友应该就不会纠结了。
下面再补充几例 sb/sth is known to be / do 的用法：
Drinking is known to be harmful. 饮酒有害。
She is known to be interested in pop music. 她喜欢流行音乐是人所共知的。
This drug is known to have adverse side effects. 众所周知，这种药具有不良副作用。
如果不定式表示的是已经发生的动作或情况，则不定式用完成式：
He is known to have been a spy. 大家都知道他当过间谍。
She is known to have been married before. 据悉，她以前结过婚。
He is known to have committed crimes. 众所周知他犯下了种种罪行。

你把Though not known to use tools in the wild 理解为 Though they are not known to use tools in the wild 的省略形式，是对的。
现回答你的后面两个问题：
(1) know sb (to) do sth 中的动词 know 通常用完成式，但这里好像并不是完成式啊？
答：你的句子不属于这种用法，而是sb is not known to be/do 的句型用法。请注意，这种句式一般是否定形式,意思是:对于某人是否如何如何，我们不清楚。

答：根据我的学习体会，在我的印象里，似乎英语中没有过去分词后直接跟动词原形的表达习惯。这可能和过去分词和形容词相似有关，英语里也没有形容词+动词原形的形式。但可以用to do.如nice to hear from you. good to tell... 等。你见过good tell, nice hear 吗？反正我没见过。在被动结构中，如be made to do ... 可能是由于过去分词常起形容词作用，也许受其影响, 过去分词后也不直接跟动词原形。因此在你提到的这种被动形式中to是不能少的。这仅是我自己的语感，解释的不一定科学，也没看到语法书这么讲过，但可能是这个道理。仅供参考！
