1.They are as red and hard as they can be(描写Mary's的双手)--- 我分析这是含比较状语从句的句子,但不明白这个带as they can be句子的中文意思和语法怎么分析?

2.How they would look if she tried to play on a piano! ----- 句末有感叹号,我分析是一个感叹句,不知对不对?这个句子是虚拟语气吗?怎样解读这个句子。

解答:根据网友的疑问,我猜网友也许没有搞清as后的they 指代什么,这是一个难点,很容易误以为和主语they一致。这个they其实指red and hard.这应该是英语中的一个惯用句型: as + adj/adv + as adj/adv can be. 后面的as引导的比较状语,你一般把它当作一种特殊的固定用法即可。我记得过去上大学的时候,在钱歌川编的《翻译的技巧》一书中曾看到过种句型。该书有这样一个例句,我至今记忆犹新:You are as wrong as wrong can be. 该书翻译为:你大错特错。 因此,这种句式,表示程度,可以翻译为:非常。。。我给你两个外刊例句你比较体会一下:
