sit可以是及物动词，用如seat。意为 to cause to be seated : place on or in a seat。所以这种及物动词sit的过去分词，就可以表示“使坐下”的动作结束后的状态——坐着。在seating和sat只能二选一的情况下，我们就只能选sat这个过去分词来表示坐着的这种状态。sat的这种用法显然不如seated或sitting作状语常用，但语法上是没有错误的。所以好题老师的这道题的答案为 sat。

我觉得用 seating 或 sat 都不合适，应该是 seated 或 sitting。
He spent hours seated/sitting (seating/sat) with his friend under the bridge.
【1】填“seated”为过去分词作“方式状语”。
备注：seat为及物动词，结构为“seat oneself=be seated”或者“seat sb=sb be seated”
【2】填“sitting”为介词in+动名词构成介词短语作“方面状语”。
备注：sit为不及物动词sit with sb和某人坐在一起。
【1】He spent hours seated with his friend under the bridge.
=He spent hours and he was seated with his friend under the bridge.
=He spent hours and he seated himself with his friend under the bridge.
【2】He spent hours sitting with his friend under the bridge.
=He spent hours (in) sitting with his friend under the bridge.
