原题中没有which是正确的句子。某个或某些网站画蛇添足，加上了which，使得句子成了四不像的错句了。

...to involve the ‘work’ (that）they have learned to believe is essential to learning 中，黑体部分为嵌入式定语从句。关系代词that在定语从句中作嵌入分句的主语而被省略了。即that是is essential的主语，而that is essential to learning是to believe 的宾语从句。
