通常是不能直接指人，只能指物或事，除非不是融合性关系(如：What is he? 这里指他的职业）

因为what = the thing that. 但是在不规范英语里，会出现指人的情况。

依据：The Free Dictionary what 词条。

1. That which; the thing that: Listen to what I tell you.

2. Nonstandard Which, who, or that: 例句：

It's the poor what gets the blame.=who

当然此句中，不属于融合关系的代词，仅是普通代词，道理应该是一样的。

你应该知道，当先行词为指人的名词，关系代词在限制性定语从句中作归属性表语时不能用who，只能用that或省略that，其原因就是归属性表语表示的是人的素质、素养、身份等，是个抽象概念，而不是具体的人。正因为此，the person that就可以用what代替，what引导名词性关系分句指人了。例如下面COCA语料库部分例句所示：

Murdoch is an 80-year-old man. He obviously is not what he was five years ago.

At 34 he is not what he was in central midfield aged 28.

What he is now is not what he was then and that is SAD because he was a decent kid who committed war crimes and escaped prosecution and jail for it and he has not been a good congressman at all in anyway what-so-ever.
