不同的语法结构可以并列吗

They didn't win by chance but rather because they performed better than the other team in the last minute.

by chance是介词词组，后面是because引导的原因状语分句，两个不同的语法结构怎么能并列呢？请问一定要相同的语法结构才能并列吗？

简单回答：不同的语法结构可以并列。

对并列成分的要求实际上是：功能相同。形式可以不同。

比如，

It was extremely expensive and in bad taste. （形容词短语和介词短语并列）

He became very forgetful and an embarrassment to his family.（形容词短语和名词短语并列）

但以上两句并列成分都做的是表语，可行。

如果功能不同不能并列，比如

虽然可以说he left that morning和he left the room.

但不能并列成

He left that morning and the room.

或

He left the room and that morning.

问题里的例句，并列的两个都可算作原因状语，类似

He’ll reject it because it’s too long or for some other reason.

并列连词and, but, or…常用于并列两个或两个以上的“相同成分”，但并非一定是“同类词”。如张道真《英语语法大全》就有以下例句：

I feel funny and out of sorts.（表语分别为“形容词+and+副词短语”）

I declare this seriously and with confidence.（状语分别为“副词+and+介词短语”）

I devote my spare time to music, books, or playing tennis.（介词宾语分别为“名词+名词+or+动名词短语”）

备注：rather 为副词用法“表示提出和前面不同或相反的观点“”。意思“相反，反而，而是”
