early next morning 为什么没有定冠词the

afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat and was caught in a storm.
Towards evening, the boat struck a rock and the girl jumped into the sea. Then
she swam to the shore after spending the whole night in the water. During that
time she covered a distance of eight miles. Early next morning, she saw a light ahead. She knew she was near
the shore because the light was high up on the cliffs. On arriving at the shore,
the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she had seen. That was all she remembered. When she woke up a day
later, she found herself in hospital.
1) 这一句（ Early next morning, she saw a light ahead），为什么不是Early THE next morning 呢？少了定冠词the？
2) On arriving at the shore, the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she had seen. 这里使用了had seen, 是不是这个原因：原来离得远，所以当时能看到灯光。现在上了岸，从物理的角度，反而看不到灯光了，凭着感觉沿着悬崖爬向原来看到的灯光。这种理解对吗？
3) 现在假设上了岸，仍然能够看到那个灯光，爬的过程中能随时看到灯光，这么说：On arriving at the shore, the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she saw. -是否正确？用一般过去时即可？

If you want to say that something happened during the morning of the next day, you say that it happened the next morning, in the morning, next morning, or the following morning.
The next morning I got up early and ate my breakfast.
In the morning Bernard wanted to go out for fresh milk.
Next morning we drove over to Leysin.
The ship was due to sail the following morning.
所以你的句子中early next morning是没有问题的。你若改为early the next morning则为明显语法错误，early是形容词，the是限定词，限定词怎么能用在形容词之后呢？正规读物就是你学习的很好的教材，不要擅自改动，你应该做的是记下这种用法，以便你日后模仿使用。

3 如果她在攀登悬崖的时候仍然能看到灯光，she saw就是废话，直接说 the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light.
