than只能后接动名词短语 being able to...而不能直接接 able to吗
为什么下面这句话中，than后面只能接动名词短语 being able to...，而不能直接接 able to...？
in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people.
本句很明显是——She is more shy than unsocial. 她是害羞而不是不爱交际。——这一种用法啊，即：
more…than 后跟形容词、副词、动词、名词等，一般情况下，要求 more 后部分和 than后部分词类相同，偶尔也有例外。
但为什么在这句话中than后面需要接动名词短语 being able to...，而不是直接接 able to...？
毕竟 than 前面已经有一个系动词 are 了，本着英语中避免重复的原则，than 后面的系动词 be 不是应该省略掉吗？

你把这个比较分句的理解错了，这不是She is more shy than unsocial 这类择比结构（与其说是B，不如说是A），而是普通的比较结构。than分句有省略：补全than分句则为：than (the advantages of) being able to converse with a wider range of people (are).
