使用定冠词的疑问

1)This species of bird is decreasing in numbers every year.

2)Foreign food aid has led to a drastic reduction in the numbers of people dying of starvation.

3)We record their types and changes in their numbers.

第一句in numbers, 没有冠词，第二句in the numbers of有了定冠词，第三句in their numbers有了物主代词，

那么，我的问题是这种用法表示数量的numbers前究竟要不要加冠词或物主代词呢？

例如：我想了解老虎在数量上的变化

应该是说成:

I want to know the changes in numbers of the tigers 还是 the changes in the numbers of the tigers 呢？

还是 the changes in the numbers of tigers ?

哪一种才是正确的呢？

1）正确，in numbers/number 是习语，表示大量的，相当于一个副词。这里单复数都对。

2）应该是in the number of people dying of starvation.我认为这里number 应该用单数。我不知你从哪里看到的这个句子。

3)正确，表示不同的数字的变化。

I want to know the changes in the number of (the) tigers. number 应该用单数，tigers前有无定冠词都对，有the,有特指含义。
