The commander in chief of the army would not have been the right man to rebel against Hitler anyway. He admitted that he simply could not cope with Hitler’s demoniacal will and that on occasion he lost his power of speech in Hitler’s presence.

这里的情态动词would是否是推测用法？上面句子中的完成体表示怎样的意义？如果would后是一般体：would not be the right man…与上面的句子在意思上有什么区别吗？是否would not have been在时间上指向的是以过去为基础的过去，而would not be只是指向过去？

would 在此是推测性用法，would have done是站在现在的立场对过去情况的推测：The commander in chief 可能不是反叛希特勒的最佳人选，尽管实际上他已经是叛军的总指挥了。
