2 in which有没有“解释说明”的意思

描写埃博拉病毒的纪实作品THE HOT ZONE（血疫），我中英文版本都有读。英文版中读到一句话：

Sloughing of the gut, in which the intestinal lining comes off, is another effect that is ordinarily seen in a corpse that is several days old.

中文版翻译为：黏膜腐脱，也就是肠壁组织脱落，同样常见于陈放几天后的尸体。

in which在此处当然可以认为是定语从句，但感觉in which这个分句像中文翻译那样，作为sloughing这个医学名词的解释说明更合适，而不是作为gut的定语从句。不知in which本身是不是就有“解释说明”前句的意思，还是说这里的in which真的只是一个定语从句？

Sloughing of the gut,(主语)// in which the intestinal lining comes off(非限制性定语从句)//, is(系动词)// another effect (表语)//that is ordinarily seen in a corpse (修饰表语“another effect”的定语从句)//that is several days old(修饰"corpse的"定语从句).

in which引导非限制性定语从句，相当于“where” 即“in which=where” ,关系代词“which” 指代前面名词短语“sloughing of the gut”

in which the intestinal lining comes off 就是传统语法中的非限制性定语从句，which的先行词为 Sloughing of the gut，而不是gut。sloughing是名词化的动名词，即一个动词临时加ing 当做名词使用，当表示的是动作的意义，这里sloughing of the gut 意为肠粘膜脱落这个动作。in which 引导定语从句，并在定语从句中作时间状语。意为在这个过程中...。非限制性定语从句本身就是对先行词的解释、补充，这是非限制定语从句的共性，没有什么特别之处。
