He is not afraid of making a speech in front of many people.
He is not afraid to make a speech in front of many people.
可我感觉书上错了,这里应该用be afraif to do...才对。
He is afraid to wake his wife.
He is afraid of waking his wife.(担心;恐怕)
又如:
She was afraid to meet my eye.
She was afraid of going mad.

I don't like to drive fast because I'm afraid of crashing.
"Why are you so quiet ?""I'm afraid of waking the children."
I'm not afraid of telling / to tell her the truth .

表示“害怕做某事”或“不敢做某事”,be afraid 之后既可以接to do,也可以接 of doing,意义相同。
I'm afraid to cross / of crossing the single-plank bridge.
I'm afraid of falling into the river.
