5 fully fledged 和 if embryonic矛盾吗

I learned this at first hand when the Berliner Ensemble visited the old Vic Theatre in London in 1965.I had been a fully fledged, if embryonic, theatre designer for five years.

请教老师：后面这句话是不是应该翻译成：即使仍处于萌芽阶段，但那时我已经是一个工作了五年的成熟的戏剧设计师了。

fully fledged不是羽翼丰满的意思吗？都羽翼丰满了为啥还说if embryonic？想知道是不是我理解错了。

embryonic - in an early stage; rudimentary; undeveloped
