这是因为 confidence 是不可数名词。confidence 无论表示“信任”还是表示“信心，自信”，均为不可数名词。如：

They don’t have much confidence in him. 他们对他并不太有信心。

He is talented, but he lacks confidence. 他有天赋，但缺乏信心。

He has never lost confidence in a bright future. 他从未对光明的前途失去信心。

表示“做某事的信心”，其后接不定式，不接of doing sth。如你的句子：

He hasn’t enough confidence to do the work alone. 他没有足够的信心独立做此工作。

注意不要以为前面有enough 修饰就要用复数，当 enough 修饰不可数名词时，不可数仍用单数。又如：

We have enough evidence to prove him innocent. 我们有充分的证据证明他是无罪的。

There isn’t enough colour in the picture. 这幅画中的色彩不够。

There’s enough food for everyone. 有足够每个人吃的食物。

A fire in the neighborhood hindered us from getting enough sleep. 附近发生火灾使我们睡眠不足。

We hadn’t enough money to pay our bus fare, and in consequence we had to walk. 我们的钱不够付汽车费，因此只得步行。
