我看一篇讲减少食物浪费小文章中有一句话：

About 62.5 million tons of food is wasted annually in US, about 16% of that is at farm. So that's food that doesn't pass the cosmetic standards, and then the other 84% is food waste that's going to landfill.

请教这句话中cosmetic standards应该不是理解为化妆品标准吧？为什么会在这里使用呢？

cosmetic的本意是化妆品，这里引申为“外表，外观”的意思了。cosmetic standards，意思是“外观的标准”。也可以写成“cosmetic appearance standards”。原句中的的意思是部分食物不符合外观的标准，就直接在农场淘汰扔掉了呗。工业上有好多词的用法很灵活很有意思，比如：male screw，外螺纹(母)；female screw，内螺纹（母）；aluminum profile，铝型材；powder coated，粉末涂层，喷涂......
