请教老师们一个问题:
最近看了一个外教老师的英语改错题:I suggest him to buy the other one.
外教给的答案是:
I suggest that he buy the other one;
I suggest he buy the other one;
I suggest buying the other one。
如果我改的话,第三句改为 I suggest him/his buying the other one.岂不是更好?因为我们知道suggest 后可以接动名词做宾语,这里用到动名词的复合结构。我也看到有的老师在英语语法网这里说几乎所有能接动名词的动词后都可以用动名词的复合结构。
但是,在我查了《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第八版时,我倒怀疑我改的句子的正确性了。因为在dislike,mind,remember,forget 等动词词条下注明了这些词 ~ doing sth 和 ~ sb/sth doing sth 的用法。(如:I dislike being away from my family 和 He disliked her staying away from home.)。
I have written him an urgent letter and suggested his sending it to Tagore. (摘自张道真:《现代英语用法词典》修订版p.1543)
I suggest (our) meeting at the station. 我提议我们在车站会合。(= I suggest that we (should) meet at the station. ) (摘自《英汉多功能词典》新编升级版 p.1700)
suggest 表示“建议”的意思后接宾语从句时,从句的谓语动词通常用虚拟语气(从词典中容易找到例句),也可以用一般现在时或者一般过去时。例如:
Her uncle suggests that she gets a job in a bank. 她叔叔建议她在银行里找份工作。(摘自《牛津英语用法指南》第四版598.3节)
He suggested that she got a job in a bank. 他曾建议她在银行里找份工作。(同上)
老师说几乎所有,并不是说所有。所以你理解的时候不要绝对化。具体哪个动词可以后接动名词复合结构作宾语,还是应该以词典给出的用法为准。suggest doing sth. 如果要说明宾语的动作是由谁做,则需要用that从句表示,且从句用虚拟语气。又如,allow可以后接动名词作宾语,动名词表示的是抽象意义,而不是具体动作,例如:We don't allow smoking in the office. 如果要表示具体不允许某人做某事,则要用不定式做宾补,My boss doesn't allow me to smoke in the office.

suggest 后面可以接动名词复合结构,你的改法 I suggest him/his buying the other one也是对的。字典不一定把一个词的各种用法都包括进去。《朗文英语语法》对此有解释,并列出哪些词可以这样用,解释如下:
16.45.2 Verb (+ possessive) + '-ing'
The following verbs can be followed by the -ing form on its own or by a possessive (e.g.my, John's) + -ing. Here the -ing form functions as a gerund (i.e. a noun), so we can use a possessive form (referring to people, but not things) in front of it: appreciate, avoid, consider (usually in questions and negatives), defer, delay, deny, enjoy postpone, risk and suggest: I don't think the children enjoy your/his/John's teasing
