Scotland were always able to get a man in between the ball and where we wanted it to be.

这个句子有一点我不明白,在 between the ball and where we wanted it to be 中,为什么将名词 the ball 与状语从句 where we wanted it to be 并列呢?

Scotland were always able to get a man in between the ball and (the place) where we wanted it to be.

The law requires a cooling-off period between the time a gun is purchased and when it may be possessed

The law requires a cooling-off period between the time (when) a gun is purchased and (the time) when it may be possessed
