2 句子结构

我想问一下，

1. In fact , happiness is how people feel in their minds. Some are unhappy in their excesses while others are happy in their poverty.

2. Who do you expect (that) they have chosen?

3. She told me how she thought (that) the machine worked.

4. They mentioned the name of the men (who) they knew (that) you had spoken to.

5. It is exciting but nowhere near as colorful.

能否分析一下这些句子的语法结构，尤其是第五句！2,3,4句能否详细得讲解一下他们的语法结构和标红字体为什么可以省略？

且第一句的how能不能换成what？而且为什么使用how？而且how在这句话中是起什么作用？什么意思?

1 how为疑问副词，引导名词性疑问分句，并在疑问分句中作表语。how不可以用what替换。形容词在陈述句中作表语，就表语提问时用疑问词how。例如，How are you? 对此的回答是 I‘m fine/very well. 一个人昨天感冒发烧，I met him yesterday and he was ill. 如果问他今天身体如何，就是 How is he today. 答案可能是，He is fine now. 再如，How do you feel? I feel hot/cold/weak/hungry etc.

2、3 句是同样的问题，涉及嵌入式特殊问句。第二句为直接问句（即特殊疑问句），第3 句为间接问句（即名词性疑问分句）。所谓嵌入式特殊问句，是指疑问分句句本身是个主从复合句，疑问词虽然引导疑问分句，位于分句之首，但疑问词并不是在疑问分句的主句中作成分，而是在疑问分句的宾语从句的成分。第二句中，who在expect的宾语从句中作宾语，引导宾语从句的连词that通常省略，但也偶尔也可以保留。第三句中，how在名词性疑问分句的宾语从句中作方式状语，that通常省略，但可以保留。

第4 句中，who为关系代词，引导嵌入式定语从句。该定语从句本身又是一个主从复合句，关系代词在定语从句的宾语从句中作介词to的宾语，who可以省略。引导宾语从句的连词that通常省略，但也可以保留。

注意：如果疑问词在疑问分句的宾语从句中作主语，或者关系代词在定语从句的宾语从句中作主语，则连词that必须省略，不可保留。例如：Who do you think will come? (不可用that）。They mentioned the names of the men (who) they knew had spoken to you. who可以省略，that必须省略。

5 It is exciting but nowhere near as colorful.

本句二个表语用but并列，第二个表语as colorful 意为同样色彩丰富，但nowhere near 否定as, 则表示色彩丰富程度相差甚远。
