but有表递进的功能吗

今天看到一个英文句子：Writing a major academic work can be difficult enough, but it is even more so when working in a foreign language.

我对其中的but有点疑问，but前后的语义并非转折关系，怎么用了but呢，难道它也可以表示递进的意义？还是这里的but应该改为and呢？请各位老师定夺一下。谢谢。

这个but不宜用and替换。第一分句描述一个读者可能已经知道的事实，而后一个事实读者可能不知道，需要but表示这种转折。逻辑为，你可能知道A，但你不知道B。这并不是你理解的所谓进程关系。

这个句子，用and或but 都可以。这句中有转折语气，是more造成的。but 经常用于引导从句，例如：（字典例句）It was a long walk but it was worth it.

and even more so 的例句：1. Water is a scarce resource today and even more so in the near future. 2. Betty has the realization that no man could ever replace Bradley and even more so when she finds out that he’s in the hospital.

but有表递进的功能吗
