the host can do without和 the virus absolutely requires 并列，可以看作两个并列定语从句，and后省略which. 整个这句话的意思是：然而，这种新技术也许会带来一种更有针对性的方法，针对宿主中病毒绝对需要而宿主却不需要的某种因子。do without是英语中的一个习惯搭配。相当于没有什么也可以的意思。相当于can do without the factor. 这里的without 可以看作副词。
