His forte, and first love, was foreign policy. 注意二个名词共用一个人称代词，意味着his forte和his first love指的是同一件事。即他的特长和他的第一爱好是同一件事——就是研究对外政策。可是the persistence of memory, and the feeling of having wasted time, are universal 注意the persistence 和 the feeling, 分别带有自己的定冠词，说明这是二个不同的事物。所以谓语动词用复数。
