怎么理解make as though 含义和用法?

Stroeve ran up the stairs ahead of me, and when I reached the top floor I found him talking to a workman in his shirt-sleeves who had opened a door at which Stroeve had knocked. He pointed to another door. He believed that the person who lived there was a painter. He had not seen him for a week. Stroeve made as though he were about to knock, and then turned to me with a gesture of helplessness. I saw that he was panic-stricken.

"Supposing he's dead?"

"Not he," I said.

I knocked. There was no answer. I tried the handle, and found the door unlocked. I walked in, and Stroeve followed me. The room was in darkness. I could only see that it was an attic, with a sloping roof; and a faint glimmer, no more than a less profound obscurity, came from a skylight.

Stroeve made as though he were about to knock - 怎么理解make as though 含义和用法? 还是as though he were about to knock整个作make的宾语呢?

另外,no more than a less profound obscurity 是什么意思呢?

24

[no object] old-fashioned + literary : to seem to begin an action
She made to go. = She made as if to go. [=she moved in a way that suggested she was going]

有的词典把make as if或make as though合起来分析为及物的短语动词,后接从句作宾语。 The Free Dictionary: make as if : begin or appear to begin an action; "He made as if to shake my hand"
Stroeve made as though he were about to knock

a faint glimmer, no more than a less profound obscurity, came from a skylight.
no more than=副词,只不过,仅仅。no more than a less profound obscurity 为 a faint glimmer的同位语,一丝微光,仅仅比极度昏暗略强一点,从天窗透了进来。

1. make as though(习语)...:假装做某事。等于:pretend that....
2. no more than = only     less profound
no more than a less profound obscurity

If you make as if to do something or make to do something, you behave in a way that makes it seem that you are just about to do it.
