for 不能删除，因为指的是在那个方面，你可以把for理解为表示原因。如果删除的话，就出现语法错误了。This past year was, in essence, in a statistical tie with 2016 主语是past year, 和2016逻辑上对应，进行比较。所以后面的for, 如果改用in terms of 也是对的。with可以理解为表示原因。with 引导的不属于状语从句，因为它不是个句子，尽管里面包含了一个定语从句。with后可以看作独立主格结构。
