It seemed as if...类虚拟语气
新人教版教材必修一U4有个句子： At 3:42 a.m., everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world were coming to an end!
我们知道，as if/as though、even if/even though等引导的表语从句或状语从句表虚拟时，如果从句表示的动作发生在过去，用过去完成时。如果按照此原则，教材中的例句were coming 的时态不好理解，但是改成完成时也感觉不对。另外旧的人教版教材好像还有类似的句子It seemed as if the world was at an end. 此句至少应该用were吧。但是为什么不用had been？请问大家该怎么理解呢？

as if / as though从句的虚拟语气形式不同于 if 条件句或者even if 让步从句。
即使as if 从句的内容明显与事实相反，非正式语体中，从句也可以用陈述语气。例如：
He treats me as if I were/was/am his son.
He treated me as if I had been/were/was his son.

同意曹老师的分析。比如章振邦《新编英语语法》(修订本)第38.2C节有如下说明：……在现代英语中使用范围越来越小。在as if / as though 引导的分句中，were 常为was 甚至is 所取代，在用一般过去时和过去完成体作想象性用法的地方也常见一般现在时和一般过去时，例如：
It looks as if it might snow / is going to snow.
He was singing as though he hadn’t had / didn’t have a care in the world.
Some boys can play the piano as though they have a natural ear for music.
All folk songs sound as if they come from the heart.
It seemed as if the world were coming to an end! (正确，这里的were coming是虚拟语气的进行式)
It seemed as if the world was at an end.（正确，这里的 was 是陈述语气形式）
【说明】在 as if 引导的从句中，可以用陈述语气，也可以用虚拟语气，还可以用虚拟语气的进行式。（详见《薄冰英语用法问答1144例》PP.615-618）
