介词for使用疑惑？

"Of course, there was no explanation he could give except that he'd gone off with a woman. I suppose he thought she could find that out for herself. That's the sort of chap he was."

"What is Mrs. Strickland going to do?"

"Well, the first thing is to get our proofs. I'm going over to Paris myself."

"And what about his business?"

"That's where he's been so artful. He's been drawing in his horns for the last year."

"Did he tell his partner he was leaving?"

"Not a word."

上面节选中，出现了2处使用介词for，分别是for herself 和 for the last year。

请教老师，我对这里使用介词for不理解，去掉for也行吧?

That's where he's been so artful. He's been drawing in his horns (for the) last year.

这里为什么要使用for呢？省略是否可以？

herself作状语，表示亲自做某事，为方式状语。for herself, for意为为了，表示受益者，为目的状语。

for the last year 与现在完成时连用，表示动作在最后这一年一直是持续进行的，并不是去年的意思。如果用last year，就不可能用现在完成进行时。

1. for herself=in her own way

2. herself=she rather than someone else did it.

That's where he's been so artful. He's been drawing in his horns (for the) last year.

1. have been doing...for the last year.

2. did something...last year.
