The barn at which Hurstwood applied was exceedingly short-handed.

The barn at which Hurstwood applied was exceedingly short-handed.

The barn at which Hurstwood applied was exceedingly short-handed.

主干:

The barn was short-handed.

at which近似where,即The barn where Hurstwood applied,难点在apply上,apply可以不及物,

如:You should apply in person.  这里的apply很可能是apply for a job.
