5 引导词that的用法和省略

White has everything he needs：......(省略)，and a receptacle for all the sentences that didn‘t come out the way he wanted them to。（1）White has everything he needs.中的everything后面是不是省略了一个定语的连词that。（2）sentences that中的这个that 引导的是定语从句吗?（3）为什么在he wanted them to。前面没有连词，是因为这he wanted them to状语从句省略了that 吗？

1. White has everything he needs.

——he needs 是定语从句，省略了关系代词 that，原因是它作从句的宾语。不应该叫连词。

2. and a receptacle for all the sentences that didn‘t come out the way he wanted them to

—— that 至句末，也是定语从句。

the way he wanted them to：是修饰 come out 的方式状语从句，现代语法直接把 the way 看作连词，引导方式状语从句，等于 as。如果说成 come out in the way in which he wanted them to，则非常啰嗦，现实语言没有这样表达的。

he wanted them to 也是省略说法，= he wanted them to come out.

问题一、

everything之后是定语从句，因为that在定语从句中作宾语，所以可以省略。

问题二、

that didn‘t come out也是定语从句，因为在定语从句中作主语，所以不能省略。

问题三、

the way he wanted them to是方式状语从句，the way用作连词，相当于as，在非正式英语或口语中也有人用how。例如：

Do it how you can. 你可按自己之所能去做。《薄冰高级英语语法》

This steak is cooked just how / the way I like it. 这牛排正是按我喜欢的那样做的。《朗文英语语法》

▲如果the way不用作连词而是用作名词在句中用作主语或宾语，其后可用that或in which引导定语从句，且可以省略。例如：

I don't like the way (that / in which) he speaks to me. 我不喜欢他跟我说话的方式。
