名词的单复数问题（at the tables为什么要用复数）

You can't really avoid talking to the person next to you at the long tables and guessing what the dishes are certainly provides adequate fuel for the conversations.

想问下各位老师、朋友，这里为什么用tables？又为什么不用 at the table？二者有何区别？

你要知道，you在这里不是人称代词，而是不定代词，类似于one，泛指人们。说话人谈论的也不只是某个餐桌上的情况，而是一种普遍情况。你把you换成people，这个句子的意思不变。你的脑子里就会出现很多张桌子，每张桌子上都坐着形形色色的人，他们在与身旁的人在交谈。
