▲句中的 the thing 是表语不是宾语。具体说来，在 This is the thing I want to say 中：

This is the thing 是主句——在此主句中，This 是主语，is 是系动词，the thing 是表语。

I want to say 是定语从句——在此从句中，I 是主语，want 是谓语动词，不定式 to say 是宾语。定语从句前面省略了关系代词 that / which，由于是用作宾语，故被省略。

▲你之所以拿不定主意 the thing 是表语还是宾语，估计你是这样想的：在主句中 the thing 是表语，但针对从句来说，定语从句由关系代词 that / which 引导，尽管关系代词由于用作宾语被省略掉了，而关系代词是用于指代先行词 the thing 的，所以 the thing 会不会是宾语呢？——但句子成分不是这样分析的。the thing 位于主句中，只能按主句的结构来分析其成分，而不能按从句结构来划分成分。
