你的理解是错误的。after作为连词引导状语从句时，从句是不允许省略的。所以，after/before 后接doing形式，都是介词加名词。所以，before和after，要么作为副词单独做状语，要么作为介词后接名词或动名词，要么作为连词后接主谓结构（从句），从句不可省略。

when则不同，when从句可以省略和主句相同的主语和be. 例如：

When water is heated to 100 ℃，it will boil.

When heated to 100℃，water will boil.

After water was heated to 100℃，it was removed from the fire.

After heated to 100℃，water was removed from the fire. 错误
