country 的位置问题

刘老师，请问这个句子的country为什么放在这里呢?

Other members of the tribe scoured the country for promising fish holes.

scoured for表示搜寻，那语序不应该是scoured for promising fish holes in the country吗？

scour 和 search 的用法大同小异。就“搜寻” 这个意义来讲，前者远不如后者常用。

我用 search 做个类比，其实就是及物和不及物的用法。仔细体会其含义：

1. search the forest for the boy

（search 及物动词，the forest 是 “搜” 的对象，for the boy 是搜的目的）

2. search the forest

（search 及物动词，the forest 是 “搜” 的对象，“搜森林” 的目的不清楚）

3. search for the boy

（省去了“搜寻”的地点，只说目的。这里 search 不及物了，等于说：look for the boy）

4. search the boy

（由于search 用作及物动词，这里就不再是“寻找男孩”，而是“对男孩搜身”了）

根据以上类比，search/scour for sth. in + 地点，是不规范的表达，不符合英语习惯。就网友的句子而言，应该使用第一种表达。

We scoured the area for somewhere to pitch our tent.

这就是典型的查单词时看汉语释义而非英语释义的结果。

scour用汉语释义看，你肯定想找的东西才是宾语，所以你想当然认为表示地点的country不能成为其宾语，因为这个在汉语里是行不通的。

可惜，英语释义告诉我们，scour的对象（宾语）就是一个地点概念

to search a place or thing carefully and completely in order to find somebody/something
