except 与 except for 的区别：

表示从一个整体中除外某个或某些个体时，如果整体在句中提及，则二者都可以用，没有区别。例如：

Everyone was invited except (for) me.  整体：everyone, 个体：me.

The room has no furniture except (for) a broken chair. 整体：furniture，个体：a chair.

如果整体在句中未提及，则只能用except for, 不能用except。例如：

The room is empty except for a broken chair.

The composition is excellent except for a few typos.

不定式不可以作介词宾语。有的语法书认为except和but可以后接不定式为例外。但很多词典将后接不定式的except归类为连词，可能和不定式不能作介词宾语有关。你知道except可以后接不定式即可，不用管此时except究竟是介词还是连词。

except可以后接that从句（that）可以省略。当except后接介词短语时，本质上是其后的that从句作了省略。所以此时的except 为连词。
