《葛传槼英语惯用法词典》对这个问题有很详细的解释(供参考):
(1)“await”不及“wait”普通。
(2)“await”是transitive verb,后面不可加preposition;如可以说“I await your reply.”,不可说“I await for your reply.”。
(3)“await”是transitive verb,“wait”也可用作transitive verb,往往两词可以通用;例如:“I await(或wait)your decision.”。
(4)“await”后面可以接gerund做object,但不可接infinitive,“wait”后面可以接infinitive,做它的adverbial phrase,但不可接gerund;如“I shall await hearing from you.”和“I shall wait to hear from you.”。这两句里的“await”和“wait”不可对调,(“await”后面的gerund间或虽然在形式上是active voice而在意思上却是被动的;例如:“In revising the dictionary the author found a great deal of material awaiting working up”)
(5)“wait for”可说等于“await”;如“I am waiting for him.”和“I am awaiting him.”意思相同,但“wait for”后面接了object还可以加上infinitive,“await”却不可;如“I am waiting for him to come.”里的“waiting for”不可改为“awaiting”。
