experiment 是Vi，不及物动词，需要介词来接宾语one thing.

one thing they experimented with was the lights

 they experimented with是定语从句修饰one thing吧，但是这里的 one thing（that） 这里的that是充当介词with的宾语成分吗？转换过来 they experimented with  one thing，  介词的宾语？

先行词还可以定从介词的宾语啊？

一般不是 the man I trust吗？

       这里的划线部分是定语从句，关系代词 that 是介词 with 的宾语，可以省略。
