    This is the place that we had the party that day.

      （that 是关系副词，在定语从句中作地点状语，属于非正式文体用法）

    This is the place we had the party that day.

       (在 place 后面省略了关系副词 that )

    《牛津英语用法指南》第四版237.7指出：“somewhere, anywhere, everywhrere, nowhere 和 place 后面的 where 也常常由 that 来替代或省略（但其他词后面则不行）。...... We need a place (that) we can stay for a few days. 我们需要一个可以暂住几天的地方。（但不能说：We need a house we can stay for a few days.）”
