other than后面的名词包不包括在前面名词的范围内

Technically, any substance other than food that alters our bodily or mental functioning is a drug.

翻译是除了食物之外所有能改变我们生理和心理机能的物质都是毒品。

第一句的food不包括在substance中，但是第二句包括在内。

所以应该怎么看other than之后的名词有没包括在主语之中呢。

rather than 和 other than 的区别：

rather than 是“对等排除”（不是A，而是B）；other than 是“范围排除”（从包含的范围中排除这一个）。比较：

Tom rather than John can help her. （汤姆而非约翰能够帮她）

Everyone other than John can help her. （唯独约翰不能帮她）

Nobody other than John can help her. （只有约翰能帮她）

所以，网友的句子，other than 后面的名词，原本都包含在前面的 substance 中，但被排除了。
