动词的过去分词和过去式同型(如何区别)

如 nurses tending the injured 我是这样理解:动词ing形式要么是动名词，要么是现在分词，反正不可能是谓语。这里我就理解为现在分词做后置定语，修饰nurses,译为:照料伤者的护士可是如果是:nurses tended the injured 这句是词典上的句子，译为护士护理受伤者。但是tended可以是动词过去式，也可以是动词过去分词。为什么不能理解为过去分词作后置定语修饰nurses，译为照料伤者的护士？

及物动词接宾语。非谓语动词作定语应该如何表示，这都是起码的知识。

Nurses tended the injured.（句子。正确）

nurses tending the injured（词组。正确）

the injured tended by nurses（词组。正确）

nurses tended the injured （仍然是个主、动、宾结构的句子——只是句首单词应大写，句末加句号了）

若把 tended 理解为过去分词，那么 the injured 是什么？要么让“伤员照料护士？”：nurses tended by the injured ，起码语法是对的。所以，你不让 nurses tended the injured 是个句子，它会是个什么呢？
