这两句都要用 the others，不能用 others。

This chemical is poisonous. The others are poisonous, too.

This dictionary is better than the others.

1. 实际上，the others 比 others 所指的范围“小得多”。the others 指“剩余的全部”，它“是有数的”，远比“没有数的” others 范围要小。

2. 这两句都是描述在特定的事物范围以内的比较，因为无范围的比较违背基本逻辑。比如，第一句。这里有10种化学物质，其中这一种有毒，另外的9种不管有毒无毒，都必须是特指的，必须加定冠词。试想：如果没有定冠词，那么除了这种外，其他所有的化学物质也都有毒吗？第二句也是一个道理。

3. others 是没有范围的；the others 是有范围的。记住这个区别即可。如果句意需要，两种用法都可以。例如：

He is ready to help others. （指任何人、未知的人。）

He is ready to help the others.（指特定的人、已知的人。例如他的同学、朋友或他认识的人）
