网友的质疑有道理。原翻译存在两处失误，其中一处甚至是错误。

1. petty quarrels，原翻译是 “鸡毛蒜皮的争吵”。这样翻译，给人的暗示是 “为鸡毛蒜皮的事而发生的争吵”。其实，按照汉语习惯，应该这样翻译：“小吵小闹”。

2. 原翻译的一个错误在于，把修饰 commentary 的 sad，放在了 state 上面，这属于修饰关系的 “张冠李戴”。结果变成了：The petty quarrels were a commentary on the bad state of the government. 

3. sad 的词义有时候跟 bad 同义，意思是“糟糕透了的；很差的”。所以，a sad commentary 意思是 “评价不良”。the bad state of the government 才是“政府的状况很糟糕”。原英文句子没说政府状况不好，而是评论不好。
