certain 和 sure 是同义词，用法非常相似。表示 “一定的；确信的；必然的” 意思时，主要有如下句型：

1. He is certain/sure of success. 他自信能成功。

2. He is certain/sure to succeed. 他一定能成功。

3. He is certain/sure that he will succeed. 他相信他会成功的。

注意：certain, sure 之后接动词不定式，表示别人对主语的肯定判断，如第二句。第一和第三句则是主语自己“确信”。请比较：

He is certain/sure to complete the task tomorrow. 他明天一定会完成任务。（别人的判断）

He is certain/sure of completing the task tomorrow. 他确信他明天能完成任务。（主语本人的自信）

但是，当It 做形式主语时，只能用certain，一般不用sure：

It is certain for Mary to win the competition. （不用sure）

It is certain that Mary will win the competition. （不用sure）

但在下列祈使句中，只能用 sure，一般不用certain：

Be sure not to forget it. 千万不要忘记呀。

Please make sure that the house is locked before you leave. 请你确信是锁上房间后才离开的。
