一、我拜读了以前您关于as用法讨论的文章，看到这么一句：

You are as fond of music as I am (fond) of dancing.

如果翻译成：你喜欢音乐，我喜欢跳舞。这样就没有体现其中的比较含义，但如果翻译成：你喜欢音乐就像我喜欢跳舞一样。这就不像人话了。

这句话究竟该如何翻译？

【答】关于这个翻译问题，我展开讲一讲：

英语的比较句主要有 as...as...格式 和 more...than...格式。

有时候，比较的范围很广。一个句子中，同时存在着不同的主语之间比较和不同的宾语之间比较。例如某午餐：

1. 汤姆喝的啤酒跟约翰喝的水一样多。

2. 汤姆喝的啤酒比约翰喝的水多。

1. Tom drank as much beer as John drank water.

2. Tom drank more beer than John drank water.

这两句中，主从句的“比较项”都是 much，但在从句中的 water 之前不能出现much，不能说：John drank much water。也就是说，“比较项”只能在主句中出现一次。鉴于此：

You are as fond of music as I am (fond) of dancing. 这句话的“比较项”是 fond，在从句括号里的 fond 必须去掉。改为：

You are as fond of music as I am of dancing.

你喜欢音乐跟我喜欢跳舞一样。—— 其实，这里比的是“程度”。应该这样翻译：

【翻译】你喜欢音乐的程度就像我喜欢跳舞的程度一样。

【答】两个as 后面的两个数字“1, 2”应该是注释用的符号，应删掉。去掉后是这个样子：

in fields as varied as soil microbiology, ecology, medicine and anthropology.

划线部分，实际是形容词短语，作fields 的后置定语。意思是：像......一样不同的领域。可以改为：in such fields as soil microbiology, ecology, medicine and anthropology. 或 in fields such as soil microbiology, ecology, medicine and anthropology.

【翻译】在土壤微生物学、生态学、医学和人类学等不同的领域。

三、非谓语问题：

What's the chance of there being a general election this year?

划线句子为什么不能写there going to be? (这是一道选择题)

四、The Republic of Ireland is a sovereign state in Western Europe.

划线部分为什么翻译成西欧？不应该是欧洲西部吗？就像West Africa翻译成西非,Western Africa 译为非洲西部一样。

【答】两种翻译都正确。前者强调“行政区域”，后者强调“地理区域”。又如：South China / Southern China，可译为“华南；华南地区；中国南部”。

五、Freedom of speech is the right of every man as far as by it if he does not hurt or control the right of another.

as far as 后面不是直接接从句吗？为什么冒出来个by it？

【答】as far as by it 应该是as far as he does by it 的省略。

Freedom of speech is the right of every man as far as he does by it if he does not hurt or control the right of another.

as far as 的用法：

（1）as far as 视为一个短语介词，后接地点名词。表示“远至......地方”。例如：

We walked as far as the railroad station. 我们走到火车站那样远的地方。

My garden extends as far as the river. 我的花园一直伸展到河边。

The ladder won't quite reach as far as the window. 这梯子很难够到窗子。

We drive as far as the utmost end of this city. 我们开车到此城的边界。

I've read as far as the third chapter. 我已读到第三章了。

（2）as far as 用作连词，接句子。意为“跟......一样远”，还表示情况达到某种程度，意为“远到...；就…而言；在…范围内”。

The desert continued as far as the eye could see. 沙漠一直伸展到视线的尽头。

They went as far as they could. 他们尽了最大努力走了那么远的路程。

The ocean stretched as far as they could see on all sides. 海洋十分辽阔，他们极目远眺无边无涯。

根据第（2）种用法，Freedom of speech is the right of every man as far as he does by it. 意思是说，这种权利的范围最远至“每个人凭借它做事情”，言论自由的权利不能超过范围。
