这个competed是不是打错了，应该是completed吧？但是搜了很多次，很多张试卷都是用的这个，不知道是不是我哪里理解错了；
这里选择what，应该如何理解呢？

1 competed 为 completed 之误。在句中为建成、完工的意思。

2 what为融合型关系代词，引导名词性关系分句。what=the thing which. 具体到这个句子，what=the period which.

in what was known as The Gilded Age

= in the period which was known as The Gilded Age
