请问老师这句话中 smog 后面是不是省略了一个 that, 然后 contaminated 后面也省略了一个 that.

按照网友的理解，我们加上两个 that，看看是什么结果：

Smog that choked our cities and rivers were so contaminated that they regularly caught fire.

1. 第 1 个 that 加上后，成了定语从句。choked 有两个宾语：our cities and rivers，问题来了：

（1）cities 和 rivers 能否并列？放在一个同等和平行的位置？显然不能。cities 这个概念的外延包含 rivers，所以不能并列。

（2）“烟雾” 能否 choke “河流” ？事实是，河流应该不怕 choke。

（3）that choked our cities and rivers 做了定语后，不可数名词 smog 能用 were 吗？
